Who We Are

York Humanists are a community of the non-religious based in the city of York.  We are open to all residents of York and environs.

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month to provide community and explore issues.  Outside of this we will meet for occasional specific events.

Our Aims

To create a community within the York area that provides a place of belonging for the non-religious.

To raise the profile of Humanism within our city and its towns and villages.

To explore issues that help non-religious people to develop their understanding of the world that surrounds them, and of themselves.

To develop and support campaigns that tackle issues of importance to Humanists. See Ceremonies & Campaigns page...

What is Humanism?

York Humanists define Humanism as a belief in rational inquiry and evidence to explain natural phenomena such as sentient existence, species evolution and the universe's existence.

We reject supernatural explanations devoid of scientific evidence, including gods and ghosts.

Humanists own and control their own moral compass.  We stress kindness, empathy and compassion for ourselves and others.  We don’t need gods to do that.

Humanism embraces the responsibility of human beings to take charge of human actions, including protecting other species and our planet. We believe in creating a better world for individuals and our human community.

Humanists believe that we have one life and should live it to the fullest while supporting others in achieving the same personal objective.
